Developing up in the Phillipines in the 90’s, Reen Barrera would often repurpose scraps of fabric and wooden into imaginative figures that grew to become central to his engage in. The constructions were stand-ins for what the Filipino artist considers a “toy-deprived” childhood, and now, Barrera continues the visible language of all those early sculptures in his recurring Ohala characters.

Generally dressed in stripes and animalistic patchwork hoods, the wildly expressive figures are covered in a chaotic mishmash of symbols and styles. Barrera likens these markings to the idiom “it’s prepared all more than your encounter,” a principle that, related to his previously figures, proceeds to floor his apply. “Regardless of what we say, our genuine thoughts can however be emancipated by our facial expressions,” the artist suggests. “For me, it’s a silent way of communicating some thing without having sounds.”

Barrera pairs this issue with fleeting emotion and more private experience with bigger themes about class and social standing. Whilst some of the wood figures are rich with colorful materials and splotches of acrylic, oil, and aerosol paints, other folks are more nominal. “One factor that I want to emphasize is the volume of element each Ohlala artwork has. Like people, some have minor though some have additional,” he shares, conveying additional:

Some men and women are born prosperous, some are born middle course, some are born very poor. But the popular floor for everyone is, we all have to offer with it… I include all the Ohlala dolls heads with canvas cloth to give a flexibility to paint their have symbols on their heads, as if they are building their very own fate. I guess that’s what we all have in frequent the electrical power to make items take place for ourselves.
